Masai Mara, Kenya, 21 Feb 2009

Gets its name from the shape of its head; from the Dutch "hammerhead". Inhabits wetlands and savannas. Strangest Hammerkop behavior is the huge nest, sometimes more than 1.5m across, comprising up to 10,000 sticks and able to support a man's weight. Hammerkops are subject of much superstition and are said to hold evil powers; it is considered bad luck to kill or harm a hammerkop.
Kori Bustard

Camera: Lumix TZ3.
Masai Mara, Kenya, 22 Feb 2009

The heaviest bird capable of flight. Males will weigh as much as 35 pounds while the females weigh about half that. It is difficult for them to fly because of their weight. They are native to southern Africa and are strictly ground dwellers, limited to the earth. They much prefer wooded grassy areas and dryer savannahs to live in, and are a bird that will live in them a long time. They are omnivorous in their diet with bugs and small mammals snakes and birds making up a good portion of it. They will feed in the early morning and later day, resting during the hotter parts of the day. Scientists see a very strange relationship between them and another bird known as a carmine bee eater. The bee eater will sit on the back of the koris to catch the bugs that the bustards stir up, and in return the bustards benefit because the bee eaters appear to be aware of predators sooner than the kori bustard.

The Golden Crested Crane is a large, spectacular and gregarious bird with long, thin legs which lives in flocks of up to 10 birds. They mainly eat seeds and plants, but also worms, snakes, frogs and insects. As they walk, they stamp their feet, flushing insects out of the ground.

Camera: Lumix TZ3.
Masai Mara, Kenya, 21 Feb 2009

This bird of prey gets its name from its crest feather, which looks like the old fashioned quills secretaries used to use in the 19th century. A terrestrial and solitary bird, it will only fly if threatened. It feeds on snakes, grasshoppers and lizards, stamping the ground to dive out its prey. Once it has caught a snake, it will beat it to death on the ground with its beak. The secretary bird mates for life and returns to the same nest site every year. Two or three eggs are laid, followed by a gestation period of 42 days. The youngsters will be ready to fly after about eight weeks.

The Nubian vulture is also known as the lappet-faced vulture because of its overlapping skin on its bare head. It is the largest African vulture and also the rarest vulture; and is considered an endangered species. It has a wing span of up to nine feet and stands more than three feet tall. It mainly eats carrion of large prey, but is also known to devour smaller animals and even live prey, relying on its excellent eye sight to locate food. An aggressive bird, it will fight other vultures for it share of the food, but does give way to Marabou storks. Territorial birds, the Nubian vultures are found in pairs only and build nests away from other vultures. A single egg is laid and incubation period is two months.

For the nomadic Masai people, cattle is the most valuable and important thing they own. Traditionally, they don't grow crops or even do much hunting. Their entire way of life revolves around their herds of cattle.
The Masai get nearly all of their food from their herds of cattle, in the form of either milk or meat. Though they do drink the blood as well, it's not really something that's done as a regular meal-time event. They generally don't hunt or grow their own crops. The cattle are literally their bread and butter. In each village, the cows are protected and herded by the men, but the milking is done by the women.
Because of their importance, the Masai use cattle as their form of currency and wealth. On average, each individual of the Masai tribe owns around 15 head of cattle, which makes these people among the wealthiest in Kenya, if a dollar value was placed on their herds. Cattle change hands for any major transaction, specifically when a warrior seeks to marry. He must pay a bride price in cattle.
After generations of stealing cattle from other tribes, the Masai cattle are not strictly one particular breed. Their cows are quite a mixed bag. Along with their herds of prized cows, the Masai also keep other livestock, like goats and sheep. The Masai are very observant with their cows and can recognize each one by their colour and body shape. Some groups use cuts on the cows' ears to help identify them.
Large chunks of their land were taken by the Kenyan government to create large game preserves, such as the Nairobi National Park, the Masai Mara game preserve, and the Serengeti National Park. So with less land, the Masai have less room to roam their cattle.
