MICHAEL HOLDSWORTH 1921-1942

Lieut. Michael Holdsworth, 1921-1942

Michael Holdsworth,
[10 February 1921 - 24 February 1942]

Michael Holdsworth, second son of George Bertram Holdsworth, and Mabel Holdsworth.

Born: 10 February 1921.

Killed on active service: 24 February 1942.

Educated at Lockers Park, Hertfordshire and at Harrow School, in Mr. Kittermaster's house, Newlands.
Subsequently at Cambridge University before joining up in the summer of 1940.

H.M.S. St. Angelo., Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.

Killed on active service off Tobruk whilst based at Malta, which was then under heavy siege as pilot of 'Swordfish' aircraft, aged 21.

Michael's name is inscribed in the Harrow School War Memorial.
The window in Saint Mary's Church, Kettlewell is dedicated to Michael's memory.
The window shows Michael in the Fleet Air Arm, flanked by St Michael and St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors.
Note that the plaque underneath the window is incorrect in that Michael was aged 21 at the time of his death, not 20 as inscribed.

Michael's name is commemorated in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the Lee-on-Solent Memorial.
