John Young Sargeant

  John Young Sargeant [1853-1918] of Greylands, Green Royd, Skircoat was for 25 years mill manager, and one of the representatives of the Halifax based wool moquette manufacturer John Holdsworth & Co Ltd at their Shaw Lodge Mills.
He died on 9th March 1918 aged 65 in Halifax after a period of illness, and was interred at All Saints' Church, Salterhebble after a service conducted by the Rev. F. O. Warman, Vicar of Siddal.
He left a widow Mary Ann (née Hitchen), and four daughters, Blanche, Gertie, Addie and Winnifred.
His obituary appeared in the local newspaper, which is copied below.

His position in the company was succeeded by Charles Sunderland, who at the time was serving in the army.

THE DEATH OF MR. J Y SARGEANT

WELL KNOWN HALIFAX RESIDENT

 Great regret will be felt by many in Halifax at the death of Mr. John Young Sargeant, who passed away on Saturday at his residence, Greylands, Green Royd, at the age of 65. Mr. Sargeant was a native of Withernslach, Westmorland, but has lived in Halifax for some 32 years. He was for 25 years of that period mill manager, and one of the representatives of Messrs. John Holdsworth and Co., of Shaw Lodge Mills. He took no part in public affairs, but he was a man of the kindliest of dispositions, and enjoyed the affectionate regard of a wide circle of friends. His illness had been a very long one, extending over 22 weeks, but borne with patience and fortitude throughout. Dr. Robinson was his medical attendant.
 He leaves a widow and four daughters, with whom much sympathy will be felt.

INTERNMENT AT SALTERHEBBLE

 The internment took place on Wednesday, at All Saints' Churchyard, Salterhebble.
 A service was conducted at one o'clock at Greylands by the Rev. F. O. Warman, vicar of Siddal, and at 1-45 the cortege left the house.
 The mourners were:
First Coach - Addie, Winnie, Mr. and Mrs. W Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson.
Second Coach - Cousin Annie, Auntie Hannah, Uncle James, Mr. and Mrs. F Wilson, Nurse Petrie.
Third Coach - Mrs. Hutchinson, Miss Hutchinson, Mrs. Lumb, Mr. Cyril Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. J Greenwood.
Fourth Coach - Mr. Clarkson, Mr. T Marshall, Mr. J Howden, Mr. J Lawrence.
 Representatives of the firm of John Holdsworth & Co Ltd, Shaw Lodge Mills, Mr. G B Holdsworth, Messrs. H Smith, C Sunderland, A Hallewell, S Peters, V Hirst, A Horsfall.
 The coffin was of dark pollard oak, with heavy brass mountings, and bore the inscription:-

Died March 9th 1918
Aged 64

 The bearers were Messrs. W Lumb, H Smith, T Longbottom, G Shaw, J T Sykes, F Bradley, the latter four being workpeople.
